The Stakeholder Management Challenge: How to Get
Everyone Aligned Without Killing the Project

Among the various challenges that complicate technology and creative project delivery in Nigerian organisations, few are as consistently underestimated as the stakeholder management challenge. When a project involves multiple people with decision-making authority  or the informal influence to derail decisions  the process of achieving alignment can consume more time and energy than the technical work itself. Board members with competing priorities. Department heads with contradictory requirements. External advisors with opinions that override internal expertise. And the structural ambiguity about who has final approval authority that allows every decision to be relitigated when a new stakeholder encounters it. Managing this complexity is not a soft skill ancillary to project delivery. It is a core project management discipline  and one that E15 Technologies Limited’s process addresses explicitly.

The Approval Structure Problem

The most common source of stakeholder-related project delay is an unclear approval structure  a situation where the delivery team does not know, with confidence, whose approval is required for specific decisions and how quickly that approval can be obtained. When approval authority is ambiguous, decisions that should take hours take weeks. Work completed to one stakeholder’s satisfaction is undone when another stakeholder with equal or greater influence reviews it. And the delivery team, unable to move forward without clear direction, loses the momentum that efficient project delivery requires. Establishing a clear, documented approval structure at the start of the project  identifying the single decision-maker for each category of decision and the maximum acceptable decision turnaround time  prevents this failure mode reliably.

Managing Competing Stakeholder Priorities

In organisations with multiple stakeholders, competing priorities are inevitable. The marketing team prioritises brand visibility in the product design. The operations team prioritises workflow efficiency. The executive team prioritises cost. The end users  if they are represented at all  prioritise usability. Each of these priorities is legitimate. The project management challenge is facilitating a process through which the competing priorities are made explicit, evaluated against the project’s defined success criteria, and resolved into a clear, documented direction that the delivery team can build against. E15 Technologies Limited’s discovery and planning process includes structured stakeholder alignment workshops that surface competing priorities early, when they are easiest to resolve, rather than allowing them to produce conflict mid-project.

The RACI Framework in Nigerian Project Contexts

The RACI framework  which defines for each project decision and deliverable who is Responsible for producing it, who is Accountable for approving it, who should be Consulted for input, and who should be Informed of outcomes  is among the most practical tools available for preventing stakeholder management problems in Nigerian project contexts. Applied at the start of a project, a RACI matrix makes approval authority explicit and prevents the ambiguity that produces rework and delay. It also protects stakeholders from being overwhelmed with decisions that are not their responsibility  ensuring that consultation is sought from the people whose input adds genuine value, and that information is shared with those who need it without requiring their approval.
