User-centred design is a phrase that has been adopted so widely by the Nigerian design and technology industry that its specific meaning has begun to blur. Used carelessly, it describes any design process that involves some consideration of who will use the end product. Used precisely, it describes a fundamentally different approach to design decision-makingone where every choice is evaluated primarily against the needs, behaviours, and mental models of the real people who will use the product, rather than against the preferences of the people who are building it. The commercial consequences of these two interpretations are significant, and understanding them is important for any Nigerian business owner who wants their design investment to produce genuine value.
The most common failure mode of design projects in Nigeria is designing for the client rather than for the user. The clientthe business owner or executive commissioning the workhas strong aesthetic preferences, specific communication priorities, and a natural desire to see the product reflect their own vision of what the business should feel like. These inputs are valuable and should be part of the design process. But the client is not the user. The user is the person who will actually interact with the website, the application, or the digital product in the real worldand their needs, their mental models, and their behavioural patterns may be significantly different from the client’s preferences. Products designed primarily for client satisfaction are frequently products that users find confusing, cumbersome, or unconvincing.
Genuine user-centred design begins with user researcha structured process of understanding the real people who will use the product before any design decisions are made. This research takes several forms depending on the project type and budget. User interviews: direct conversations with representative users about their needs, their current workflows, and their pain points with existing solutions. Usability testing: observation of real users attempting to complete specific tasks with an existing product or prototyperevealing the friction points that designers and clients, who are too familiar with the product, consistently fail to notice. User surveys: structured data collection from a larger sample of representative users. And behavioural analytics: analysis of how real users are actually interacting with an existing digital product, which frequently reveals patterns that contradict the assumptions built into its design.
The impact of user research on design decisions is consistently surprisingeven to experienced designers who believe they already understand their users well. User research regularly reveals that the navigation structure that seemed logical to the team is confusing to first-time users. That the call to action the client wanted prominently featured is not the one users are looking for when they are ready to engage. That the information hierarchy that reflects the business’s internal priorities does not match the sequence in which users actually want to consume information. Each of these findings, surfaced through research rather than after expensive development, saves time, budget, and the credibility cost of releasing a product that does not work for the people it was built to serve.
E15 Technologies Limited’s Design and Prototyping phase is built on user-centred principles. Our design process begins with the userstheir needs, their contexts, and their existing behavioursbefore it considers visual aesthetics or technical implementation. Our prototyping process includes user testing against the interactive prototype before a line of code is written, ensuring that the product entering development has already been validated against real user behaviour. And our design reviews always include the user perspective alongside the client perspectiveasking not just ‘does the client like this?’ but ‘will the user understand this and want to act on it?’.
